Fireweed Learning Community is building a holistic teaching centre that includes Canada's second ever Botanical Plant Sanctuary! The Sanctuary will be built using permaculture practices to include medicinal plants, fruit trees, shrubs, and perennial plants.

The permaculture design is taking place on a leased parcel of land in Northern Ontario that has been free of all chemical and farming inputs for over 10 years. We hope to transform this property in stages into a learning hub by incorporating agriculture, agri-tourism, plant medicine and yoga. Our goal in year one is to begin the market garden and install the plant sanctuary & food forest which has been inspired by Senses Of The Soul and United Plant Savers.

The funds raised in this campaign are going towards the purchase of fruit trees, shrubs, plants and seeds. Fruit trees such as Apple, Pear, & Cherry cost anywhere from $15-$35 for organic and cold hardy varieties. Shrubs such as Goji, Elderberry, Blackberry & Raspberry range from $10-$20 a plant. The taller trees will be planted intermixed with the shrubs and bushes to form permaculture guilds and create a food forest. For the understory perennials such as Echinacea, Primrose, Bee Balm, Cohosh, Ginseng along with herbs such as Thyme, Hyssop, Oregano, and Sage will all be purchased in plant or seed form ranging from $5 -$15.

We will be using all the funds from this campaign to purchase plants and seeds from ethical and organic producers.

The instalation of the plant sanctuary will begin in May taking place in stages as directed by mother nature.  All funds raised will be ensuring a plant or tree finds its way into a protected area to thrive and teach us its plant wisdom.  We also hope to build a passive solar greenhouse to combat the short growing season.
